Melbourne International Games Week: Hour of the Wolf and the Intersection of Immersive Theatre and Game Design

A panel discussion and audience Q&A about the development and design process of new immersive theatre production Hour of the Wolf, and the intersection of interactive theatre and game design.

Malthouse Theatre has pioneered a new form of ‘choose your own adventure’ immersive theatre in Australia, taking video game mechanics—such as sandbox worlds, puzzle solving, non-linear storytelling, and player cause and effect on the world—and blending them with a high end, audience led immersive theatre experience.  In this genre Malthouse Theatre first developed and presented Because the Night in 2021, labelled Melbourne’s ‘must-see theatre experience’ by Time Out Melbourne. Set to premiere in October 2023 Hour of the Wolf takes this form further, integrating responsive audio technology and puzzle solving into a contemporary narrative with an innovative story structure.

Join Matthew Lutton Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Malthouse and Co-Creator and Director of Hour of the Wolf, and David Harris the Interactive Dramaturg on the work, and multi-disciplinary artist Vidya Rajan for a panel discussion (with audience Q&A) about the development and design process embedding game elements into large-scale immersive theatre work, hosted by Terry Burdak of Paper House.

Presented by Malthouse Theatre.
