THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI WITH A LIVE ORIGINAL SCORE BY THE ANG FANG QUARTET

The Ang Fang Quartet performs a live score to the famous Robert Wiene silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr Caligari live on the Malthouse Outdoor Stage.

Caligari is one of the most highly regarded classics of German Expressionism and is packed with iconic imagery and memorable sequences. The nightmarish story of a mad doctor who hypnotises a somnabulist to commit murders unfolds in a surreal landscape of angular sets and chiaroscuro lighting.

Highly influential on subsequent cinematic trends such as film noir and fantasy, critic Roger Ebert lauded it as arguably the first true horror film. The film is brought to life by the Quartet’s original score, featuring cello, vibraphone, trumpet and guitar.

Founded in 1998, the Ang Fang Quartet specialises in performing and composing live scores to silent films and has created scores to accompany some of the most evocative and beloved films of the early cinematic era.
