How to find Malthouse Theatre

113 Sturt Street, Southbank 3006, VIC AUSTRALIA.

**FROM 16 JULY**

Southbank Boulevard will be closed to all traffic between St Kilda Road and Sturt Street. Trams will continue to operate and the precinct will remain open to pedestrians. We recommend adding extra travel time to your journey and taking public transportation. For more information see the City of Melbourne’s plans and roadwork maps here.


The No. 1 South Melbourne tram goes right past our door. Get off at Stop 18. Any tram down St Kilda Road—jump off at Grant Street, Stop 17 and take a 3-minute walk.


Any train to Flinders Street, then a 12-minute stroll through Melbourne’s sparkling Arts Precinct.


Secure your bike to one of the many racks outside the foyer. There’s a Melbourne Bike Share station outside the theatre. Hire a helmet from the IGA, just along Sturt Street.


Limited on-street parking is available on Grant Street, Sturt Street and Dodds Streets. Two disabled parking spaces are just outside The Coopers Malthouse entrance on Sturt Street.

The closest secure carparks are:

Arts Centre Melbourne Car Park (enter from Sturt Street)

The Australian Ballet Centre Car Park (2 Kavanagh Street)

Malthouse Theatre Season Pass Subscribers get a 15% discount on the Valet Parking Service at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Car Park. Book in advance (online or in person) for an additional 10% discount.

Wheelchair Access

Wheelchair bookings can be made for all performances at The Coopers Malthouse. Patrons can either transfer from their wheelchair to a seat, or the patron may stay in their chair. We can also reserve a space next to this position for companions or friends attending.

Companion Card

The Companion Card has been developed by the Victorian Network on Recreation and Disability (VICNORD). It admits carers to shows as complimentary guests. Holders of this card are welcome at all Malthouse Theatre mainstage season performances.

Hearing Assistance

Malthouse Theatre offers a Hearing Assistance System which allows patrons who use hearing aid to tune into the frequency of that venue. For patrons without a hearing aid, we can offer a similar system and provide the patron with headphones. These systems are available for all mainstage performances at The Coopers Malthouse.

Please contact Box Office to let our team know that you intend to use the system.

Auslan Interpreted and Audio Described Performances 

Malthouse Theatre offers AUSLAN interpretation and Audio Description for a select number of performances. Concession price tickets are available for patrons accessing these services.

Relaxed Performances are for patrons who prefer a more relaxed environment. Designed to welcome audience members with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or disabilities that create sensory sensitivity. Lights and sounds will be adjusted, and the doors will remain open to allow patrons to take a break.

Open 7 days, from 8am and before all shows. The perfect spot to sink your teeth into a meal and to digest performances.

Reservations are not accepted but we recommend that you arrive 40 minutes prior to your chosen performance should you wish to have dinner.

The Coopers Malthouse Bar

Open Tuesday to Sunday, 5pm to late.

A well-stocked cellar and your favourite beers on tap. Buy a round for pre-show tipples and post performance toasts. Takings from the bar help fund the productions you see on stage.

Malthouse Theatre recognises Ticketmaster as an authorised vendor of Malthouse Theatre production tickets.

Discounted Tickets


Full-time students and those aged 30 years and under can access discounted tickets for all Malthouse Theatre mainstage performances. Proof of eligibility is required when booking or collecting tickets. Acceptable proof of eligibility includes photo identification displaying age or a student card issued by an Australian education institution.


Our Concession rate is available to the following:

  • Australian Pensioners
  • Health Care Cardholders
  • Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance Members
  • Customers using Auslan or Audio Description services

Proof of eligibility is required when booking or collecting tickets.


Holders of a Seniors Card issued by any Australian state are entitled to a discounted rate on all Malthouse Theatre performances.  Be sure to select the Seniors rate when booking online. Your Seniors Card must be presented when booking or collecting tickets. For more information on the Victorian Seniors Card please see their website


Selected performances throughout the season are available for purchase at Preview pricing. Check individual productions for preview performances and pricing.


Holders of this card are entitled to a complimentary ticket for their companion for any Malthouse Theatre performances. To book using a Companion Card, please contact the Box Office and present your Companion Card upon collection of your tickets.


If you purchase eight or more tickets to the same Malthouse Theatre production, for the same date and time, we offer a group price discount. We recommend doing this over the phone or at the counter so our staff can ensure your group is seated in the best location possible.


Full time students and MEAA Members are also eligible for Rush pricing ($20). Available 60 mins prior to the performance start time at the box office. This is available for limited performances only. Proof of eligibility is required.

Industry Memberships

Malthouse Theatre is proud to offer arts industry members access to discounted tickets. We foster a unique community experience that sparks conversation and we strongly encourage the arts community to join the dialogue.

For an annual membership fee of $30, Industry Members may access two $35 tickets to Malthouse Theatre mainstage season productions and selected special events. Industry Memberships are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Industry Memberships are available to:

  • Theatre practitioners (actors, directors, writers, set designers, costume designers, sound designers, lighting designers, producers etc.);
  • Interns and paid employees of arts organisations in Victoria that are supported by The Australia Council and Creative Victoria;
  • Secondary school teachers and university professors of Drama or Theatre Studies; 
  • Current members of Actors Equity (MEAA), AACTA, Arts Access, Australian Writers’ Guild and Arts Hub.
