BY SARAH KANE

A gin-swigging journalist and his young lover check into an anonymous hotel room. When a soldier and a war zone explode through the bathroom window, things become barbaric.

This was the debut script of in-your-face playwright prodigy Sarah Kane. Her prescient dissection of our response to violence was heralded as ‘depraved’ by some, ‘tender’ by others. So ignited the polarising firestorm of Kane’s blazing career.

Directed by Anne-Louise Sarks (The Testament of Mary) Blasted will give Malthouse Theatre audiences the chance to experience the power and controversy of Sarah Kane, and the play that shook the world.

★★★★ Blasted will shock and haunt you, yes, but it will also jolt you out of complicity.

– THE AGE

★★★★★ one of those gems of theatre that we so often hope to find but very seldom do... an astonishing production of an extraordinary play.

– STAGE WHISPERS

The work of a director who has come into her full powers

– THE CONVERSATION

Riveting, real and unreal, like a nightmare ... It’s hard to think of a better director for this text than Sarks.
