Internationally acclaimed percussionist Claire Edwardes OAM, a champion of the contemporary classical genre, leads Momentum Ensemble in a program of living, breathing music.

Edwardes is passionate about the wide dissemination of living new music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Collaboration is at the heart of her musical practice, having worked with many of Australia’s leading and emerging composers and performers to expand the percussion and chamber music repertoire. She has had over 50 new works written for her as a soloist and Ensemble Offspring have commissioned over 300 new works throughout their 27 years in the industry.

This program draws Momentum Ensemble, comprised of Australia’s best young musicians into this expanding community of contemporary classical, as they amplify diverse voices, and tackle challenging, inspiring music along the way. Edwardes jumps on board as mentor, soloist, and ensemble director in a concert among the dreamy sculptures of the McClelland Gallery, Langwarrin and at Southbank’s Malthouse Theatre.

Australian artists are the centerpiece of this collaboration. Don’t miss the world premiere of a new work by Alice Chance, commissioned by AYO. Performed alongside the inimitable Ross Edwards’ Laikan, a set of dances rich with rhythmic vitality, this program delves deep into the diversity and innovation of Australia’s artistic voices. Culture and connection resonate in works by Yuin composer Brenda Gifford, and earthy impressionism forms Silva, a concerto for percussion by Mary Finsterer. From the atmospheric to the raucous, versatility and expression belie the modern Australian soundscape.

This program also features the music of two American composers: Molly Joyce’s works are a dialogue between creativity and identity as a disabled artist, and her chamber work, Lost & Found is a regimented groove, alternating through notions of loss and rediscovery. Chris Cerrone’s South Catalina is luminous, integrating composition and improvisation into one explosive score.
