POLICIES & PERFORMANCES

What happens if I am running late for a performance? Will they let me in? Do I get a refund on my ticket?
Being late affects performers and the rest of the audience. Where possible, we attempt to establish a suitable latecomers entry point, but we advise audiences not to rely on this. We reserve the right to admit latecomers during a suitable break in the performance and to a different seat.

Latecomers are not entitled to a ticket refund or exchange unless as outlined in the Live Performance Australia Ticketing Code of Practice. Exceptions may occur at our discretion. For more information see our full terms and conditions.

Where can I find the running time for a production?
When confirmed, the running time will be posted on the individual production pages.

Where can I find content warnings for shows?
A lot can change along the journey from concept to production, as scripts are rewritten, actors make offers, designers bring in new elements, and directors make big changes right up to opening night. We publish content warnings for all our shows to give you an idea of what to expect, and we do our best to keep this information up-to-date throughout rehearsals as the show takes shape. We aim to warn audiences well in advance about what you’re about to see, but it’s important to be aware that things may change at the last minute. Visit this webpage for more information about content warnings and see content notes on each event webpage.

What is your babes in arms policy?
The majority of Malthouse Theatre productions have recommended age warnings, and we kindly ask that these extend to all those who enter our theatres including babies. For productions without recommended age warnings, we require children over the age of 2 to hold a ticket and occupy their own seat.

EATING & DRINKING

Can I eat and drink in the theatre?
We permit hot and cold drinks in the theatre, and we ask that you transfer them into a plastic container before entering the theatre. Transfer stations are available near the entry to each theatre. Food is not allowed in the theatre.

When does the bar and cafe open?
Please view The Malthouse's opening hours via the link below.

THE BUILDING

Where do I park?
Limited on-street parking is available on Grant Street, Sturt Street and Dodds Streets. Two disabled parking spaces are just outside The Malthouse entrance on Sturt Street. The closest secure carparks are only a 10-minute walk away:

Arts Centre Melbourne Car Park (enter from Sturt Street)
The Australian Ballet Centre Car Park (2 Kavanagh Street)

Where are the toilets?
A single-stall, accessible, gender-neutral bathroom is located to the left of The Café on the ground floor. Gendered bathrooms are located on level one, accessible via stairs or lift.

What’s the history of the building?
In 1986, Carlton and United Breweries gifted the historic Malthouse to the State Government of Victoria. It was re-developed as an agile and contemporary theatre complex, and became the home of Playbox Theatre, later Malthouse Theatre. It was rebranded as The Coopers Malthouse in 2014 and in 2020 it was renamed to The Malthouse.
