WHETHER HE'S SINGING IN ENGLISH, ARABIC, OR NUER, HE EMOTES LIKE SOMEONE WHO'S USED TO MAKING HIMSELF HEARD OVER RAUCOUS CROWDS

With each year that passes, the love for Melbourne's adopted son Gordon Koang grows.

For the legendary South Sudanese performer—and his cousin and accompanist, Paul Biel—playing music is about bringing people together as well as something even greater. In performing a blend of traditional rhythms and lyrics that dance between English, Arabic and his native language, Nuer, their ultimate mission is to raise awareness of the asylum seeker experience, and earn the money they need to reunite their own family in Australia someday soon.

With sold out shows, festival slots both here and overseas and, more recently, the Levi's Music Prize, Gordon Koang can spread his message of peace, love and unity to more and more people.

As Gordon performs from his eleventh record, Unity—released on the Music in Exile label in August and named a feature album on both RRR and PBS—his joyous sounds of love and hope will ring out especially loudly into The Malthouse Courtyard.

Penny Drop presents Gordon Koang on Malthouse Outdoor Stage.
