THE SUITCASE SERIES

The Suitcase Series empowers young people to tackle the greatest challenge of their generation: climate change.

The Suitcase Series is Malthouse Theatre’s award-winning participatory program for Year 9 and 10 students. Combining in-class activity with in-theatre and online performance, this innovative program is an opportunity for students to develop and expand their theatre-making skills and share work with peers.

Every two years, we commission a new script exclusively for the program. We are thrilled to announce Atlantis by Chanella Macri will be the 7th play commissioned for The Suitcase Series.

Using Plato’s ancient myth of a sunken city as an anchor point, Atlantis is an allegory for Australia in its current stage of climate crisis and the search for lost systems of knowledge that might help us understand our relationship to the environment. Drawing on Pasifika philosophies and modes of storytelling, this fantastical play is about three young people stepping into their power as future guardians of country, and a perilous journey to the bottom of the ocean.

Malthouse Theatre makes work that fans the flames of radical culture, so there’s always the chance that someone will get naked or say something rude. The nature of devising theatre is that things can change right up until opening night.
