Malthouse Theatre // What Happens Next

At Malthouse Theatre we collaborate with local and international artists to create inventive performances that cut to the core of the human experience. Theatre has the power to interrogate, disrupt and to be an agent of change—and we think it always should. At Malthouse Theatre the work we produce explores the world personally, socially and politically. Based in a dedicated venue, The Coopers Malthouse in Melbourne, we are a home for live experiences that entertain and provoke a dialogue with and within audiences.

Welcome to Malthouse Theatre.

History

For over 40 years, we have fanned the flames of Melbourne’s radical culture, exerting significant influence on our city’s artistic community. In 1976, Carrillo Gantner, Graeme Blundell and Garrie Hutchinson formed the Hoopla Theatre Foundation, which transitioned into the Playbox Theatre Company in 1980. In 2004, Michael Kantor reimagined Playbox as Malthouse Theatre, named after the iconic venue that has been the company's home since 1990.

No matter the name, we've consistently served as a counterpoint to the mainstream. To this day, our distinctive style resonates locally, nationally and globally.

Culture

We champion artistic and cultural diversity and seek out alternative points of view. Committed to inclusivity, Malthouse Theatre invites collaboration without bias. We actively address inequities in representation. We believe fiercely in gender equality. We champion positive change and passionately influence its enactment.

We acknowledge the Land and Songlines of the Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation. We support the right of a Treaty for all First Nations peoples of Victoria and Australia. We engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, supporting their right to self-determine artistic identity while promoting artists and emerging talent, audience development and community engagement.

Venue

The Coopers Malthouse in Melbourne is our dedicated venue: a home for innovation and live experiences that provoke and entertain. A historic beer-making malthouse built in 1892, the building at 113 Sturt Street, Southbank was gifted to the Victorian State Government in 1986. Converted into an agile and contemporary theatre complex, it comprises our  world renowned 500-seat Merlyn theatre, the newly refurbished 180-seat Beckett Theatre and the Tower.

Renamed The Coopers Malthouse in 2014, our building also accommodates rehearsal rooms, a bespoke workshop and offices. And of course, there is the Box Office, the Coopers Malthouse Bar and the Café to make your experience at Malthouse Theatre a memorable night out.

About Us

For Artists

Besen Family Artist Program

For 14 years, the Besen Family Foundation has supported professional development for early to mid-career individuals through an acclaimed Artist Program. The program cultivates the next generation of ambitious theatre-makers by allowing them to gain experience and ongoing artistic work within a mainstage theatre company.

Female Director In Residence

Generously supported by Craig Reeves, Malthouse Theatre’s Director in Residence program provides intensive career development and a salary to a female theatre director. In 2018/19, Ming-Zhu Hii—our eighth Director in Residence—will continue her residency with Malthouse Theatre.

Previous alumnae include Sapidah Kian, Janice Muller, Samara Hersch, Clare Watson, Roslyn Oades, Adena Jacobs and Anne-Louise Sarks.

Vanguard

Representing the future of Malthouse Theatre, Vanguard is a cohort of highly engaged and culturally curious agents of change who are welcomed into the company as new ambassadors. Vanguard is co-led by Malthouse Theatre’s General Manager and Board member Jan Owen (CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians). The Vanguard program is made possible by the generous support of Debbie Dadon AM.

CO.LAB WRITER + DIRECTOR PROGRAM

Supported by the Copyright Agency Ltd. Malthouse Theatre’s Co.Lab program invites writer/director teams to collaboratively develop ideas, explore potential and test new works.

The Malcolm Robertson Writers Program

The Malcolm Robertson Foundation supports the development and presentation of original Australian works by way of a Writers Program. Since 2004, the program has commissioned two emerging artists per year to write a new Australian work for Malthouse Theatre.

Living Now

In 2019, Malthouse Theatre and Footscray Community Arts Centre continue their partnership through the LIVING NOW program. This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Malcolm Robertson Foundation. This program supports visionary storytellers to bring contemporary stories to the stage. Now in its second year, the program provides a residency and development opportunity for two writers from culturally diverse backgrounds with an interest in theatre.

Other Opportunities

We are interested in all artists who are interested in us, and are always eager to engage the rich contemporary performance scene beyond the confines of our building.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
