With the sure-fire ingredients of magic, romance and laughter, A Midsummer Night’s Dream deals with the universal theme of love and its complications. The plot focuses on three parallel stories: the trials of two sets of lovers—Hermia and Lysander and Demetrius and Helena—who find themselves trapped in a magical forest; the marital dispute between the fairy king, Oberon, and his Queen, Titania, and the hapless attempt by a group of rough craftsmen—led by Peter Quince and Bottom—to stage a production of ‘Pyramus and Thisby’ for the wedding of the Duke of Athens.

Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father wants her to marry Demetrius. To escape the arranged wedding, she and Lysander elope into the woods. Demetrius follows them, and he, in turn is pursued by Helena who is in love with him. Mayhem is the result when the mischievous fairy Puck, playing Cupid, makes some hilarious errors of judgment in implementing Oberon’s instructions.

Meanwhile, The Mechanicals rehearse a badly-written play in the woods, and Bottom (one of the Mechanicals) is transformed by Puck’s magic, into a donkey. Oberon then teaches Titania a lesson in obedience by making her fall in love with the ass and soon all the characters find their lives changed by the magic in the forest. Needless to say, all is happily resolved and we are asked to consider the tale as though we have shared in a dream.
