Walking into the Bigness
// to step into the unknown.
Walking into the Bigness / takes all the courage and openness a person can muster. It’s the passage of adolescence; the gaining of knowledge; the crises and adventures that test and make us.
Richard Frankland, singer, songwriter and creator of Conversations with the Dead, returns to Malthouse Theatre with a new production. Walking into the Bigness is a collection of stories and songs from Richard’s extraordinary life as a child abattoir-worker, a young soldier, a fisherman and a field officer for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. These are Richard’s tales given universal voice by a prodigious and commanding cast.
Under the co-direction of Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Redfern Now) and Chris Mead, and with music performed by Richard himself, Walking into the Bigness is an intimate, emotive and humorous work that will take you through the undulating terrain of a life / to step into the unknown.
★★★★ The five actors are magnificent. Directors [Wayne] Blair and Chris Mead have drawn an incredible and moving collaborative portrait ... you have to see this show.
★★★★ It’s terrific theatre: a tale of emotional and moral growth, rich in incident and feeling, smartly put together and highlighted by some very fine, very big performances.
Direction by Wayne Blair and dramaturge Chris Mead is flowing and deft ... I doubt there has been a more potent illustration of the casual as well as entrenched systemic racism in Australia in the 1970s and 80s on our stages.
