Thirty years ago, a group of young Chinese students stepped on the flight for Australia. Inspired by dreams of the West, they encountered countless struggles: disillusioned hopes, lost identity, broken relationships. They were outsiders, marginalised and ignored. They started to question their decision: why did I come all the way here?

Xiao-qi Ding’s script loops between the past and the present, and ponders the struggle and redemption of the Chinese immigrants. The characters emerge through an intricate weaving of melodrama, realism, and fantasy.  Humour and sadness collide.

Directed by renowned director Nancy Black, designed by Amelia Lever-Davidson and Matthew Adey, with a soundtrack by David Franzke, the production style is minimal and non-naturalistic, placing the focus sharply onto the performers and the themes of the play.
