Malthouse Education is excited to present the exciting new stage adaption of The Hate Race, together with creative writing workshops for students.

This is a call to action... this is how we change.

From schoolyard battles and the sting of ‘otherness’ to the universal search for belonging, this much-anticipated stage adaptation of Maxine Beneba Clarke’s award-winning memoir is an unflinching interrogation of the complexities of race in Australia, told through Beneba Clarke’s own experience of growing up the child of Black migrants in a predominantly white society.

While Drama students will be inspired by the innovative direction and powerhouse solo performance of Zahra Newman, English classes will find the text is both a fine example of Writing About Country and an inspiration for those looking to develop their creative writing skills and craft their own voice through the dramatic style.

The Hate Race exposes biases, challenges and societal norms, and asks us to foster empathy and understanding as we seek an inclusive future. An interdisciplinary piece of theatre employing monologue, poetry, nostalgia and lashings of humour, it ultimately highlights to students that there is more than one form of storytelling... and that their own unique expression is welcome on Australian stages—and pages.

Supplementary Writing Workshops for Students

In an exciting add-on opportunity, English and Theatre experts Christine Lambrianidis and Shane Woon will host a series of post-show workshops where they will guide students and their teachers through practical exercises, targeted provocations, insights and discussions across topics including  Purposeful Construction, Features of Dramatic Writing and Page to Stage.

ADVICE FOR SCHOOLS

This production contains depictions of external, internalised and systemic racism and micro aggressions, depictions of racial violence, references to slavery and colonisation, depictions of anxiety and struggles with mental health within minors.
