Season 2017 / A knock-out start to the year
1 March 2017
The Encounter
2 – 10 February
After sell-out seasons across the globe (including ours), we were thrilled to bring the transcendent The Encounter to Melbourne. Mystifying and awing audiences, it had to be heard, to be believed.
Little Emperors
9 – 26 February
Next, Little Emperors was Malthouse Theatre’s runaway success of the inaugural Asia TOPA festival. In this world premiere we teamed up Australian writer Lachlan Philpott with Chinese theatre director Wang Chong; performed in English and Mandarin Little Emperors interrogated the effects of China's one child policy. Congratulations to writer Lachlan Philpott and Director Wang Chong on this sublime new work.
The Homosexuals, or 'Faggots'
17 February – 12 March
Then, in another fiercely charged piece of new Australian writing, Declan Greene's The Homosexuals, or 'Faggots' has opened to rapturous praise. This biting farce pokes at the intersections between identity politics, race, gender and religion. Hilarious, savvy and just the right amount of camp, this play throws political correctness in the blender, and hits blitz.
Away
3 – 28 May
Finally, Away, our co-production with Sydney Theatre Company—currently playing in the Sydney Opera House—has mesmerised audiences with high critical praise. This classic from the Australian theatre canon has received an update from our Artistic Director Matthew Lutton, and will land on our stage in May this year.
There's a lot to celebrate in Season 2017. And that's just the beginning.
